Pokémon beginner's guide: play or collect?

You want to get into Pokémon cards, but where do you start? The world of booster packs, sleeves and sets looks big. This beginner's guide boils it down to the one thing that matters first: do you want to play, or do you want to collect? Your answer decides what you buy as a beginner.

Playing or collecting?

Players use their cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG): they build a deck and play matches. For them it's not about how rare a card is, but how good it is in a deck. Collectors look for beautiful, rare or complete runs of cards and want to keep them in top condition. Plenty of people do a bit of both, which is fine, but it helps to know where your focus lies.

What you need to play

To play you need a ready-to-play deck. The easiest start is a pre-built deck (a "battle deck" or starter deck): they're balanced and you can play right away. You'll also want deck sleeves (protective pockets) to protect your cards while shuffling, and a deck box to keep everything together. A playmat is optional but nice.

What you need to collect

If you'd rather collect, you buy booster packs to pull cards. The key difference from playing: protection matters immediately. Nice cards quickly lose value from scratches and bent corners. Start with sleeves for single cards, a binder to organise your sets, and toploaders for your best pulls.

Protect from day one

Whether you play or collect, protection isn't a luxury, it's the basics. A sleeve costing a few cents prevents damage that would make a card worth tens of euros worthless. Think of it as the cheapest insurance there is. We wrote a separate guide on it: how to best protect your cards.

Start smart without overspending

You don't have to buy everything at once. A good starter set is simple: one ready-to-play deck if you want to play, or a few boosters if you want to collect, plus a pack of sleeves and a deck box or binder to keep everything tidy.
