How to choose a deck box

You've got a deck or a stack of cards, and you want to store them safely. But there are dozens of deck boxes in every size and shape. How do you pick the right one? This guide helps you decide based on what you actually need.

What does a deck box actually do?

A deck box is a sturdy little case that keeps your cards together and protects them from dust, moisture and bending. For players it's where your ready-to-play deck lives, ready to grab and go. For collectors it's handy for keeping small sets or loose cards organised. The difference from a binder: a deck box is made to carry, not to flip through.

How many cards should fit?

The most important question is capacity. A standard Pokémon deck is 60 cards. Many deck boxes state their size in card count, for example 80, 100 or more. Always allow extra room, because sleeved cards take up more space (more on that below). If you play one deck, a box for 80 to 100 cards is enough. If you want to carry several decks or spare cards, pick a bigger box or a model with separate compartments.

The types of deck boxes

There are a few common types. A flip box has a lid that folds to the side or up, simple and affordable. A magnetic deck box closes with magnets, feels premium and stays shut, ideal if you carry your deck often. A snap box is a hard plastic case that clicks closed, very protective. Some boxes have a separate compartment for dice, counters or a second stack. Choose by how you use it, not by how it looks.

Does your deck box fit sleeved cards?

This is the mistake many people make. If your cards are in sleeves (protective pockets), they get thicker, and fewer fit than the label promises. If you play with double-sleeved cards, you need even more room. So always check whether the box handles sleeved cards, or simply go one size up. Nothing more annoying than a lid that won't close.

So which one is right for you?
