Collecting a master set is one of the most rewarding long-term projects in the Pokémon TCG. You pick one set and collect every single card in it, until the collection is truly complete. Here is how to start smart.

What exactly is a master set?

A master set is a complete collection of one set, including every variant. So not just every regular card, but also every reverse holo (the same card with a shiny background) and all secret rares (cards numbered above the official set count, like 087/086). By comparison, a regular set completion stops at one copy per number. A master set goes further and ends up much bigger. Depending on the set, you are quickly looking at 200 to 400 cards.

Pick your first set wisely

Not every set makes a good first master set. A recent set is the easiest start: boosters are widely available at normal prices and single cards are still affordable. With older sets, the last rare cards often get expensive. Also pick a set whose artwork you actually love. You will be working on it for months, so it should be a set that makes you happy every time you open the binder. Smaller sets are more achievable than big ones, which is better for your motivation and your budget.

Open boosters or buy singles?

Both, at the right moment. Opening boosters is the fun part and quickly fills up your regular cards and reverse holos early on. But for the very last rare cards, opening packs gets expensive: the odds of pulling that one specific secret rare are small. Smart collectors combine the two: boosters for the bulk and the fun, singles (loose cards you buy for specific gaps) for the final holes. And keep your doubles, they are great for trading with other collectors.

Keep your progress visible

Use a checklist, on paper or in a free collection app, and tick off every card as you get it. Sort your cards in a binder by set number, with the reverse holo next to the regular version. That way you can see the remaining gaps at a glance and never buy a card twice by accident. That overview is half the work of a master set.
