Buying single boosters, what should you look for?

A Pokémon booster pack holds ten cards from one set. What is inside is random, but the distribution is not: every pack has a fixed number of commons and uncommons plus one card of higher rarity, with a small chance at an ex, an illustration rare or a special illustration rare.

Buying single packs has two advantages over a full box. You can try a set without spending tens of euros at once, and you can choose exactly which set you open. We split our own booster boxes so we can sell them by the pack.

Pay attention to which set the pack comes from. Every set has its own chase cards and its own pull rates, and a pack from an older set is not automatically worth less. What matters is whether the set is still in print, because out of print sets get rarer and more expensive.

What do you do with your pulls?

Open your pack over a clean table and take the cards out carefully. The most valuable card is usually last in the stack. Put a good pull straight into a penny sleeve and then a toploader, before it travels from table to box to drawer and loses its edges on the way.

The newest set is easiest, because those cards show up everywhere and are still widely available.

A penny sleeve for every card you want to keep, and a toploader for your best pull.
