Which binder should you pick for your Pokémon collection?
A binder is where your collection becomes visible. Binders differ in three ways: how many pockets per page, how the cards go in, and whether it zips shut.
Nine pockets per page is the classic, because it is exactly one three by three grid and the format most people build a set in. Four pockets per page gives each card more room and is popular with people showing off expensive cards. Twelve pockets is for fitting many cards into little space.
More important than pocket count is the loading type: always pick a side loading binder, where cards slide in from the side. In a top loading binder cards slide straight out the moment you turn the book over. Also avoid ring binders for cards you consider valuable, because the rings press into the cards closest to them.
Zipper or no zipper?
A zippered binder closes completely. That keeps dust out and makes sure nothing falls out when you take it to a tournament or a friend's house. A binder without a zipper is lighter and cheaper and is fine if the book simply stays on your shelf.
Store your binder upright, not flat, and never under a stack of other things. Cards left under pressure for months pick up impressions that never come out. For your very best cards, skip the binder and use a toploader or a magnetic holder.

- Each page has nine pockets on both sides, so eighteen cards per leaf. A ten leaf binder holds 180 cards, a twenty leaf binder 360.
- Do sleeved cards fit in a binder?
- In most pro binders they do, but it gets tight. If you want to store cards sleeved, choose a binder that explicitly states it takes sleeved cards.
- Side loading or top loading?
- Always side loading. With top loading, cards fall out the moment you turn the binder over.
- Is a ring binder a good idea?
- For ordinary cards it works, but the rings press into the cards next to them. For valuable cards choose a binder without rings.
- How should I store my binder?
- Upright, not flat, and not under other items. Pressure leaves permanent impressions on your cards.
