When do you use a toploader?

A toploader is a rigid plastic holder you slide a card into. It is meant for cards that will not go back into a deck: your best pull from a booster, a card you are shipping, or a card you want graded. The hard walls stop the card from bending, and bending is exactly where value disappears.

The standard size is 3 by 4 inches, roughly 76 by 102 millimetres, and it fits every Pokémon card. Thickness is expressed in points: 35pt is enough for a regular card, while 55pt to 130pt is for thicker cards or cards already in a sleeve.

Never slide a card into a toploader unsleeved. Put a penny sleeve around it first. Without one the card rubs against the plastic with every movement and you get exactly the edge wear you were trying to prevent.

Toploader or magnetic holder?

A toploader is cheap, strong and perfect for shipping. A magnetic holder, also called a one touch, clamps the card between two pieces of clear acrylic with a magnetic closure and is made for display. For a card going into a box, choose a toploader. For a card going on your desk or shelf, choose a magnetic holder.

Every order we send leaves Oudenburg protected and packed properly. Combine toploaders with penny sleeves for full protection, or look at binders if you want to store a whole set.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Pokémon card fit a 3x4 toploader?
Yes. 3 by 4 inches is the standard size and fits every Pokémon card, including one inside a penny sleeve.
Do I need a sleeve inside a toploader?
Yes. Without a sleeve the card rubs against the plastic. A penny sleeve costs a few cents and prevents edge wear.
What do 35pt, 55pt and 130pt mean?
Points describe the thickness the holder can take. 35pt is fine for a regular sleeved card. Thicker or double sleeved cards need 55pt or more.
Can I get a card graded in a toploader?
For shipping to a grading service, a toploader with a penny sleeve is the usual method. Always check the exact shipping instructions of the service you use.
Are toploaders reusable?
Yes, they last for years as long as you do not bend them.
