When to use toploaders for your Pokémon cards

You often hear you need toploaders, but no one explains when. For every card it's overkill, for your best pulls it's essential. This guide explains simply what a toploader does and when you actually use one.

What exactly is a toploader?

A toploader is a rigid, clear plastic holder you slide a single card into from the top (hence the name). Unlike a sleeve, a thin flexible pocket, a toploader doesn't bend. That's the whole point: it protects your card against creasing, folding and pressure. A card that stays flat keeps its value. Toploaders are cheap, usually sold per 25, and come in sizes for regular and thicker (already-sleeved) cards.

When do you actually need one?

Not every card needs a toploader. Your regular playing cards and your everyday collection are fine in sleeves or a binder. You use a toploader in three moments. First, for your valuable pulls: an expensive or rare card you don't want to see bend. Second, when shipping: a card in the post without a toploader often arrives creased. Third, as temporary protection for a card you plan to grade soon (have professionally assessed for condition). In short: the more valuable or fragile the card, the sooner a toploader.

Toploader, sleeve or one-touch: which do you pick?

These three get mixed up a lot. A sleeve is the thin base layer, cheap and for every card. A toploader is the hard protection around it, for your better cards. A one-touch (magnetic holder) is the premium option: a hard plastic holder that closes with magnets and shows your card off nicely, ideal for display or long-term storage. A handy rule of thumb: sleeve for everything, toploader for your best cards and for shipping, one-touch for the showpieces you want to display.

How to use a toploader properly

One important rule: always put your card in a sleeve before you slide it into the toploader. Without a sleeve, the card rubs against the hard plastic when going in and out, and that's exactly what causes scratches. Slide the sleeved card gently into the toploader, don't force it. If you're shipping it, lightly tape the opening shut (not on the card itself) so it can't slip out. That way your card arrives safe and flat.

Use a toploader for your valuable cards, when shipping, and for cards on their way to grading. For the rest, sleeves or a binder are enough. Always sleeve first, then into the toploader. That way you protect exactly the cards that deserve it, without over-protecting your whole collection.
